History of Super Mario Bros

It's easy to take for granted when you sit down to play super mario bros online today, but in 1985, this single piece of software completely resurrected the video game industry from the infamous Video Game Crash of 1983.

The Vision of Shigeru Miyamoto

Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, their goal was to create a game that was essentially a grand finale for the Famicom (NES) cartridge format. The original game utilized merely 32 kilobytes of storage. Due to this astronomical limitation, the developers cleverly re-used textures: the white fluffy clouds in the background are actually the exact same sprite as the green bushes, just colored differently!

Selling 50 Million Copies

The game launched with the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America and became an absolute juggernaut, eventually selling over 50 million copies. It established standard tropes for almost all 2D side-scrolling platformers to come: power-ups, smooth screen panning, momentum-based jumping, and brilliant level design that invisibly teaches the player how to play without a dedicated tutorial.

A Legacy Lives On

Today, Super Mario is the most recognizable video game character of all time, out-ranking virtually all other fiction mascots. We are proud to host a completely faithful HTML5 iteration of this masterpiece on our retro mario game online platform for a new generation of players to experience.
